Brief overview
An established digital agency who specialises in app creation has been tasked with the design and development of a new GPS app. The agency is looking for an exciting young designer, to create the general theme and user interface for the app.
The app is intended for a smart watch, although it needs to be accessible over multiple devices, including smart phone and desktop.
The app itself will track distances, so users can log performance and progression over multiple activities such as walking, running, swimming and cycling, while also logging and tracking the actual routes they have travelled and completed.
The main goal is to display maps, statistics and imagery in a concise and legible way so users can track, share and compare their activities and fitness goals. It will also be a great resource for people looking for alternative routes to take on their next run, walk, cycle, swim etc.
The app must respond consistently over multiple devices, and must utilize the functionalities accessible with each device. Think large call-to-actions, unique scrolling features, collapsible content areas, simple navigation icons etc.
Begin with studying various GPS, Fitness and Social apps to gain an understanding of features available, and most importantly, what might be missing. It’s important to understand how a user intuitively navigates around such an app, so download some and actually play around with the functionalities and features. Are there features that seem long-winded or clunky to you, are they things you’d like to see implemented differently? Make a note of these features and try to create a solution in your own way. User Interface design is all about usability. You must have a solid understanding of the end result of the design. It can’t just look good, does it function effectively?
